What Do Omikuji Fortune Levels Mean?
Omikuji often summarize a result with a luck rank, but labels and ordering can differ. The rank is a starting point; the detailed guidance provides the context.
A rank is a summary, not the whole reading
Many omikuji place a short luck rank near the beginning of the paper. This gives a quick overall direction, but official visitor guidance also describes separate messages for health, work, love, business, study and travel.
A favorable rank does not promise that every part of life will proceed smoothly, and an unfavorable rank does not mean every section is negative. Read the detailed text before deciding what the result says.
Commonly seen levels
JNTO gives one common sequence as dai-kichi, kichi, chu-kichi, sho-kichi and kyo, translated broadly as excellent, general, middle, small and bad luck. This is a useful example, not a universal table for every omikuji.
A shrine or temple may use additional ranks, omit some ranks, or place them in a different order. The collection and the issuing site should therefore be identified before comparing one rank with another.

Official visitor guidance advises reading the explanation carefully, including after a bad result. The specific sections can show whether the text recommends patience, caution, preparation or another response.
When an omikuji contains a poem or older expression, treat the rank as an orientation rather than a substitute for the text. A short label cannot carry all the conditions and nuance of the complete reading.
Use a rank carefully
A practical reading starts with three questions: Which collection is this? What does this site say the rank means? What does the detailed text say about the matter you asked? This avoids importing a ranking chart from another tradition.
